The
commercial heart and main arterial street of the city's resort area,
Atlantic Avenue is chock full of hotels, shops, and restaurants. But
the public space - looking tired and outdated - were not projecting
a sufficiently upscale image to attract well-heeled tourists when
the city of Virginia Beach asked EDAW designers to help them revitalize
the project.
EDAW
conceptualized a unique streetscape based on concrete pavers that
brings land and water together through a series of connector parks.
At all of these parks, cross streets are converted into pedestrian
links between Atlantic Avenue and the oceanfront boardwalk. Each mini
park focuses on a different aspect of beach and resort life.
