Originally
constructed in 1973, this public housing project was only half occupied
and decaying, contributing to the blight of its neighborhood.
The
Delaware State Housing Authority hired Kitchen & Associates Architectural
Services to upgrade all of the 108 residential units into attractive
places to live.
Constructed
of wood framing and plywood siding, the original contemporary design
was in sharp contrast to the surrounding conservative brick architecture.
So the architects chose concrete masonry to create dynamic new exteriors
that compliment the local vernacular and will take a great deal of
abuse without any ill effects.
Some
creative detailing and the use of traditional gable forms help improve
the pedestrian scale of the project. Enhanced by a similar new façade
treatment a community building houses offices and maintenance along
with laundry facilities and rooms for meetings.
